Common Medical Conditions

Heart disease

Inflammation is at the core of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Pro-inflammatory signalling in the body can be exacerbated by factors such as a poor diet, obesity, and smoking. A healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet, exercise, and cessation of smoking can significantly reduce heart disease risk by reducing inflammation. However, there is a complex interplay between nutrients in the body where even healthy foods can induce unhealthy effects when consumed in excess or the wrong balance.

Diabetes and glucose intolerance

There are two main types of diabetes including type 1 (insulin-dependent with an early onset) and type 2 (late onset). There is also a condition known as pre-diabetes which results in the body not being able to utilise sugar or insulin efficiently, leading to glucose intolerance or insulin insensitivity. Pre- and type 2 diabetes are strongly associated with obesity and inactivity, but may also be linked to immune dysfunction, infections, and certain medications. Lifestyle is also a contributing factor to diabetes, and an easy way to make a difference is to take care about your eating and sleeping times.

Gastrointestinal disorders

These digestive tract disorders include conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, lactose intolerance, acid reflux, hiatus hernias, and cancer. Gastrointestinal disorders affect a wide range of people and the cause is often multifactorial. Some triggers include diet, bacterial infections, immune dysfunction, gut microbiota changes, genetics, and some medications. Aside from therapeutic treatment with medication, the easiest way to improve the health of the digestive tract and to relieve symptoms is through dietary intake and avoiding exposure to potential triggers such as food additives.

Cancer

This is the malignant growth and proliferation of cells within the body. The altered cells have basically become corrupted due to changes in their DNA. Cancer is almost always considered to be multi-factorial, which means that more than one change is required for cells to lose control of their function and regulation. Multiple factors have been associated with cancer such as smoking, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, obesity, chemical exposure, sunlight (UV), radiation, and viruses. Many of these environmental factors can be controlled, at least to some extent. Sometimes, however, cancer may occur because of a genetic predisposition due to inherited genes, or de novo (spontaneous) changes to DNA during cell replication combined with faulty DNA repair mechanisms, which are not inherited. It is often difficult to diagnose the exact cause of cancer, but a balanced and healthy lifestyle with good nutrition and exercise is a very effective way of reducing the chance of developing cancer.

Obesity

This generally refers to a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or more. However, BMI, although quick and useful, is a generalised measurement with a margin of error among individuals, especially when taking into account ethnic differences, muscle mass, or pregnancy. Body weight and the percentage of body fat are fundamentally regulated by the balance of energy intake and energy expenditure. However, it is not as simple as just energy in minus energy out because the body’s metabolism is dynamic and responds to changes in weight, muscle–fat ratio, circadian rhythms, and hormonal cues. Efficient weight loss requires an understanding of physiology and working against the body’s natural instinct to conserve energy for times of deficit.

Obesity is strongly associated as a risk factor for many medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes, hormonal disruption, inflammatory diseases, infertility, and many cancers. But health risks do not suddenly begin with an obesity diagnosis – they are also associated with general overweight, albeit to a lesser degree. Losing excess weight or avoiding weight gain is a positive step towards improving your health and preventing disease.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a doctor and a PhD?

A typical doctor is a physician with a medical degree (Doctor of Medicine) which is usually abbreviated to M.D. Another class of doctor is known as a Doctor of Philosophy, most often referred to as a Ph.D. There are many types of Ph.D. degrees such as science, engineering, history, literature, etc. It is important that any advice and guidance you receive is from a professional in a relevant field to your enquiry, i.e., a medical or nutritional field.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, generally only licensed physicians can prescribe medications.

Why can't I buy supplements from this site?

Unlike prescription medication, supplements such as vitamins and herbal remedies are not regulated or approved by authorities such as the FDA. We do not recommend anyone to purchase supplements online, and instead acquire them from a reputable pharmacy or receive a prescription from a licensed clinic. Online supplements may not contain the ingredients on the label, and may potentially be dangerous to your health. Please exercise caution when considering the use of supplements. OneLife Nutrition and Health can advise you about any nutrient deficiencies via a detailed diet analysis of a food diary.

Is it safe to buy supplements from a reputable company?

Even essential micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals can have unhealthy effects when taken in excess. They are called micro for a reason, so please take care when using supplements, especially high-dose ones.
