The Key to Good Science
Science does not have all the answers and scientific understanding is rarely black or white, but various shades of grey. Generally, science is self-correcting, and our understanding is established and built on reproducible data. It is important to beware of opinions or misinformation from biased research or incorrectly interpreted data.
Just as athletes have various levels of performance ranging from amateur to Olympic gold medalists, scientists also have a huge range of skills, abilities, and level of understanding. The source of scientific data is very important, and the most reliable research comes from reputable non-profit institutions such as government universities. Data should be peer-reviewed by experts in the same field and published in reputable scientific and medical journals. It is important for scientific data to stand the test of time with other publications confirming the accuracy and reproducibility of results.
Media outlets, including reputable news channels and newspapers, often pick up on trending stories, but the real science or the actual level or stage of scientific understanding can get lost in translation. This may be due to misinterpretation by or the limited knowledge of journalists. Moreover, news articles are not so interesting without a dramatic headline and embellishment of the story. In contrast to the potential misinterpretation by reputable media channels, social media fundamentally contains flawed data, misinformation, fake news, and uneducated opinions, which is unfortunate because it also reaches the widest audience.
Be careful of misleading information from companies with unfounded claims about their health products or services. At best they may have no effect and be a waste of money, and at worst could be toxic or life threatening. OneLife Nutrition and Health does not support unsubstantiated scientific claims or products.
