Male fertility has declined ~50% over the past 50 years – that's a 1% drop per year. Unfortunately, increasing male infertility has been projected to continue over at least the next 2 generations.

Regular consumption of oily fish, a good source of n-3 fatty acids, has been linked to healthier sperm. For couples having difficulty conceiving, a balanced diet containing healthy fish portions is a prudent way of helping to start a family.

Extra information: Women should take care to avoid the consumption of large, predatory fish, such as swordfish and tuna, when pregnant or trying to conceive to reduce exposure to heavy metals. Smaller fish such as salmon and sardines have much lower concentrations of heavy metals, and should therefore be part of a balanced diet containing 2–3 portions of oily fish per week.
